Match Review: Watford vs Arsenal (Premier League 2015/16)

Arsenal recorded a comfortable 3-0 victory against Watford after a difficult first half to keep their reputation as flat-track-bullies well and truly alive thanks to goals from Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud, and Aaron Ramsey.

In the first half Watford caused Arsenal plenty of problems they were getting forward a lot, and creating chances all the while Arsenal struggled to break down their two banks of four.

Unfortunately for Watford they couldn’t make any of their chances count and it is easy to see why they have only managed 6 goals so far this season. Bringing in someone who can score goals at this level will be vital for them in January if they want to stay up.

Watford started the second half brightly and there was a moment where they felt Petr Cech should have been penalised for a handball outside his area after a mix between Cech and Per Mertesacker. The goalkeeper rush out of his area to close down a ball and the German head the ball onto the top of Cech’s arm before it looked like it bounced down and hit his hand. Referee waved play on but it was shocking defending from Arsenal.

And then just past the hour mark there was more controversy as Arsenal took the lead through Alexis Sanchez. Mesut Ozil weaved his way into the box and looked to be fouled by Chelsea loanee Nathan Ake just as he was about to take his shot but luckily the ball fell to the feet of Sanchez who hit it home from close range.

However Watford will point to the fact that they could have had a penalty, or at the very least a free-kick on the edge of the area, up the other end seconds before Arsenal went down the other end and scored.

Barely five minutes later Arsenal doubled their lead thanks to Olivier Giroud, who had not long been on the pitch, after he got on the end of a ball from Ozil to drive it into the net.

And then less than 10 minutes later Aaron Ramsey made it 3-0 to create a truly awful 15 minutes for Watford. Ramsey got on the end of a Hector Bellerin pass before his shot was deflected off Ikechi Anya catching out Heurelho Gomes on its way to the back of the net. Up until that point Ramsey had missed plenty of chances by firing them high or wide.

The result is harsh on Watford. The scoreline flatters Arsenal, Watford didn’t deserve to lose by three goals and it could be argued that they deserved to get a point out of the game. However you knew that as soon as Arsenal scored they would most likely go on to get a couple more.

Watford’s biggest weakness is their lack of goals. There is no point being able to defend well and create chances if you are going to finish them, so often we hear that you get few chances at the top so it’s important to take the ones you do get. Watford would do well to learn that lesson.

Arsenal fans are raving about Ozil at the moment saying he is world-class and that he’s proved everyone wrong. It was Watford. Arsenal often win these games convincingly. Yes he had a good game but he needs to continue to have good games in matches like the one against Bayern Munich midweek in the UEFA Champions League.
